Picture of a winding road

Find a road. Get a gift.

Every road is a gift. You can’t see clear to the end. So getting there is a gift to be discovered, an adventure to be unraveled. I’ve always believed that, but never thought I’d have a chance to write about it like this.

In fact, in decades of professional writing, I had never really thought about a column. But there I was sitting across from an editor who was offering me just that—a chance to do a weekly column on anything I wanted. That was more than three years ago.

I’m fast forwarding here, but suffice it to say that Trips with a Twist became that column. It was created to showcase what for me are the original trips with a twist—the dozen or so mystery trips I have planned for my family.

Trips with a Twist was to be a place to share the special things our family has done with mystery trips. But I soon realized the column could be broader, include a greater range of content and rekindle my fascination with the odd and out-of-the-ordinary along the open road.

For the Truesdell family, mystery trips have been the defining travel experiences. (You can read about their impact on my daughter and co-author on her page.) We have much, much more to share about them.

The more I write about the gifts of the open road, the more I believe that the idea of a mystery trip is something legitimately new and invigorating. And a way to freshen and re-energize any road taken. That’s why they’re soon going to have a place of their own.

As for Trips with a Twist, it’s still about making memories and unwinding the gifts that are the roads of our lives. You can expect to find travel news, tips, resources – as well as our own tales from the road, of course.

We’re not rich or famous. We’re just ordinary people who are into sharing what we discover about travel. It doesn’t get any deeper than that. We’re doing this for the love of it. Won’t you join us on our journey?
