Private islands of the Midwest

I posted last week about Private Islands Online (647/477-5581), the world’s largest directory of private islands available for sale or rent. And about how of the approximately 500 islands listed worldwide, 14 of them are in the Midwest.

Michigan’s islands

Bat Lake Island is in Marquette County. While just an acre, the purchase includes three acres on the mainland of Bat Lake. It includes a log cabin built in the 1960s. Price is $169,900.

Located at the entrance to the Lake Huron’s North Channel, just three and a half miles from Drummond Island, 18-acre Saltonstall Island has a 12 x 50 pier and a 28 x 24 cabin with two bedrooms, a loft and bath. The price is $582,500.

Potagannissing Bay at the beginning of the North Channel in Lake Huron is home to Ashman Island. With 61.5 acres and more than a mile of shoreline, you’re talking some serious island. Included is a luxurious home with a huge 3,500-square foot deck with hot tub. For $1,250,000 you also get a dock, boathouse and seaplane hanger.

Plunk down $1,425,000 to be the proud new owner of Big Trout Island, located in the same general area of Lake Huron. The island has 30 acres, a new home and boathouse. A 7,000-square foot harbor was dredged in 2003.

You’re too late for Peck Island, however, because this 52-acre gem has been sold. It features a three-bedroom cabin with a boathouse and a large dock. It is just west of Drummond Island. Also sold ($149,000) is Turtle Island, named for the large turtles in Hi-Land Lake that lay their eggs here. The island is located near Hell, Michigan.

Pipe Island ($2,200,000) has also been sold. This 13.3-acre parcel sits in the lower St. Mary’s River one mile north of DeTour Village. It has many amenities, including a quaint little greenhouse. Rounding out the Michigan islands listed by PIO is 32-acre Butterfield Island in Lake Huron. Although now sold, its amenities include a 60-foot dock, 400 feet of sandy beach and a helicopter landing pad.

Minnesota’s islands

Deering Island is one of only three private islands in Minnesota’s Lake Minnetonka. This 3.2-acre haven has a home with all the modern conveniences and, even though it may seem remote, it is only 22 miles from downtown Minneapolis. Price: $2,900,000.

Located in Lake of the Woods, Paradise Island is a 3.4-acre retreat near Young’s Bay. It comes with a modern home and a separate two-bedroom guesthouse. It is priced at $378,888.

Wisconsin’s islands

Beaver Dam Lake is a large inland lake only one hour from Milwaukee. Majestic Island in the lake comes with a two-bedroom cottage and a 24-foot pontoon boat. The island is a full two acres and is listed for $169,500.

At 26 acres, Basin Island is the largest private island in Door County. It includes a state-of-the-art home, a mainland property and a rare amphibious vehicle. All of this for $2,900,000.

Five-acre Lake Winter Island sits in Lake Winter and features a new and fully furnished cedar chalet and 2,000 feet of frontage. $895,000. Big McGraw Island is a five-acre hideaway in Big McGraw Lake. Purchase also includes a mainland waterfront cabin. Yours for $275,000.
