For every one of our nearly 31 years of married life, my wife and I have collected Christmas ornaments as souvenirs of our various trips—be they official vacations, spur-of-the-moment getaways or escapes perpetrated over leisurely three-day weekends.
New ornaments are among the most eagerly awaited surprises of our annual gift giving. Ornament addiction is an affliction we have unwittingly, but not regrettably, passed on to our two daughters who are now firmly in its grasp. The result? Boxes and boxes of ornaments—treasures grown so numerous that we have had to resort to the painful task of tagging some as First Choice.
This ornament habit actually inspired me to compile a nationwide directory of Christmas stores, 314 Places Where It’s Always Christmas, a daunting task to say the least. In the meantime, if you (like us) have a fascination with Christmas ornaments, I hope you’ll enjoy the following Midwest sampling. Perhaps you can visit one or two in the midst of your holiday travels. But remember to call ahead or check a store’s Internet site if available (preferably both) before planning a visit.

Although there are a good many other stores throughout the Midwest where you can find Christmas presence all year long, I have limited the listing here to those that maintain Web sites. My experience has been that Christmas stores move frequently, change hours on a whim and simply go out of business with some regularity. I think that’s because many of them are hobbies that have morphed into businesses. Sometimes it works. Sometimes not . . . so always call ahead.
